Nutrition on a Disney Cruise

As I continue my journey into becoming an improvement warrior we set off on a Disney cruise on the Disney Dream cruise ship. This was my 3rd Disney cruise, 4th overall and my daughter Spencer’s first– she turned 13 months on the boat.

Cruises are all about food and the Disney crew took care of us, more on that later. But as you may have been hearing for more then a year I have been doing the ketogenic diet, I started on July 6, 2014 and it has been the greatest thing for me in terms of fat loss, performance both mentally and physically, and overall health but during the cruise I basically went back to paleo, a high protein paleo diet. Because the ketogenic diet is not a high protein diet. Basically I would just get between 60-90 grams of protein per day on keto.

On the cruise was another story I was not going to pass up all the wonderful food. I would say I was getting between 200-300 grams of protein while on the cruise.  I was still eating as much fat as possible though. Anywhere between 150-200 grams,  but that pails in comparison to the 300-350 grams I usually get while on keto.

If you’ve never been on a cruise before you have your own dinner staff that take care of you each dinner you’re on the boat. Our staff went above and beyond the call of duty.  The first night I made it known of mine and my daughter’s preferences— no gluten, no soy, no corn— and everything cooked in butter. So with that we had to have our meals pre-ordered and specially made because the oils they cook with contained either soy or corn.
 .
Soybean oil and/or canola oil are two of the most damaging and lethal substances you can put into your body. The oils are already rancid before cooking and then you heat them up and they become even more so. They are one of the biggest producers of inflammation in the body and lead to visceral fat— fat stuck around your organs— which leads to inflammation around your organs and inside your gut.
 .
Inflammation will basically open you up to every single disease you never want to get and then your environment and genes will decide what you ultimately end up with. Person A might become fat. Person b Alzheimer’s disease. Person c arthritis. Person d cancer. Person e………… You fill in the blank with whatever disease/sickness you never want to get.
 .
Oh and by the way– a high carbohydrate diet is a high inflammation diet.
 .
So back to our staff…… Our head server, Szilard from Hungary, and server Andre Andre (yes that is his full name) from Indonesia, took charge and made sure every single meal was taken care of for me and my daughter. Even the ones where we left the ship for the private island and beach.
 .
Each night I would order two entrees and give some to Spencer. We would also order what we wanted for breakfast and lunch.  Our daughter is also keto/paleo— she’s only had a treat meal once in her life and that was for her birthday and that wasn’t my decision– I had wanted to make her a keto cake. And by the way she ended up getting a fever after eating her cake. Coincidence? I think not!

We both regularly shared shrimp, all types of fish, crab, scallops, steak, eggs, vegetables, chicken, pork, ham, avocado. But by the last day all she would really eat was bacon 🙂

Some of my favorites were my Paleo ‘cereal’, of course bacon, the filet migon (this  was a replacement for the sirloin  recipe because the sauce had some bad stuff in it– nice replacement huh?), sea bass,  and a while lot of others I’m probably forgetting.

On cruises you will basically have 24/7 access to food, and the majority of it is sugary treats and or carbs. And there was plenty of that especially on a Disney cruise loaded with kids. It may take an hour to feed my daughter but it’s worth it not to spike hers (or my) blood sugar and watch the emotional roller coaster come out that I see in a lot of these kids. Plus Spencer’s body is not fully developed obviously. Spiking blood sugar and then getting a huge insulin release will wreck havoc on her brain and liver development, which I don’t want because she is a baby Improvement Warrior.

Plus there is an obesity epidemic in kids in the United States, and a behavior epidemic as well. In my opinion and the opinion and scientific research of many experts you can blame that on carbs and way too many of them. 2/3 of your brain is made up of fat and 1/5 of your total cholesterol is inside of your brain—- don’t feed it what it’s made of then it doesn’t work right. Feed it too many inflammatory  carbohydrates will cause it not to work right. Gluten, grains, sugar all pass through the blood brain barrier which is why they are so damaging and so addictive. And to a young brain even more so. The human brain doesn’t fully develop until aroûnd the mid-20’s.
 .
Food is one of our pleasures in life, but it doesn’t have to be one that damages life and body. Take control of your food intake. Always ask what type of oils it’s cooked in. Switch out potatoes/fries for vegetables; add good fats and salts to your vegetables.

In order to do this you can follow the herd. The herd is average, mediocre. You must rise above and become the improvement warrior. An improvement warriors work is never done. A little bit here, a little bit there. Little changes that end up making a huge impact on your life and those around you.
